HOW LONG does it take to make a piece?

After cleaning and preparation, each Burnin4U piece takes about 1.5 to 4 hours to craft, depending on the stone's size, brittleness and hardness, and complexity of the design. Stone-Craft is a labor of love and it is paramount we do not sacrifice the artistic process, creativity and quality of the final product just to save a few seconds off our process.

What is STONE-CRAFT?

Stone-Craft is a catch-all term that includes anything used to modify the appearance, structure and form of the raw stone material on its transformative journey to become a unique piece of beauty and function. This may include, drilling, carving, cutting, grinding, shaving, sanding, polishing and more.

Are the pieces CLEANED?

All stones are cleaned prior to working on them and then upon completion, run through an intensive, high heat scrub with detergent.

What type of stones are there (PETROLOGY)?

Sedimentary rocks are formed from layers of sand, silt, and biological materials. Harder stones are igneous rocks, formed from melted rock deep inside the Earth. Metamorphic rocks are formed from other rocks transformed by heat and pressure underground. Many of the burnin4u rocks are sedimentary, due to the relative ease of modifying their form.

WHEN were the stones formed?

Our natural stones are sustainably sourced from a variety of areas deposited during the Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian periods, about 450 to 359 million years ago.

Can you do CUSTOM pieces?

Burnin4U is happy to modify our raw stones to your specifications or even to sculpt a stone you provide to us . People often share stones of special meaning for us to craft; a stone from a deceased parent or something they've had for years. These are especially enjoyable pieces to work on as stones have often traveled around the world to land in a dusty box in the garage or attic. After the sculpting process, they can take their place as a beautiful and meaningful piece of art on the mantle or coffee table. Are these pieces MASS PRODUCED?

Each Burnin4U piece is hand-crafted with great care and is one of a kind. Sculpting each unique piece takes time, effort and creativity. Mass produced pieces (booo) do not share the one of a kind beauty of our pieces and can be of low quality.

Do the stones ever BREAK while sculpting?

Raw stone has varying hardness and unseen fault lines. Our equipment can also subject them to stress. While we are constantly refining our skills, some stones do break during the sculpting process because of unseen weaknesses...or user error. ;) This is part of the beauty and challenge of repurposing elements derived from nature. The development of patience and calm temperament is just one of the many benefits of working with your hands. See "LOGO" below.

LOGO - What is the logo from?

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...." my tools, like my skill set, were not quite up to the task of sculpting stone. I rushed the process and my first attempt resulted in the stone splitting right along a seam hidden deep inside the rock. I stared at this ruined piece with its rough smile smirking at my failed attempt. I decided to hold onto this first effort and slowly my skills and tools improved until, one day, that wicked smile became an expression of pure joy and mirth. In that moment, I found the Burnin4U logo beaming at me from within a cracked stone's smiling face. This broken rock became the embodiment of success found in failure, discovering patience within frustration, transforming mockery into joy, and the symbol of my journey from illness and weakness to a new place of healing and strength.

Personal note: The powerful metaphor of finding beauty and purpose within something previously perceived as broken, blows me away.

S&H - How do you handle Shipping and Handling?

Shipping will be calculated based on the weight of the piece and shipping destination. Burnin4U is currently stream-lining our process and will soon launch our eCommerce and shipping pages. Until then, the Burnin4U staff will be pleased to work with you to provide an accurate quote.
